Hesse-Darmstadt, Grand Duchy. A War Honour Badge In Iron United Republic of 7 mm x 16 mm(Kriegerehrenzeichen in Eisen). Instituted 13 March 1917 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. (1917 issue). Constructed of magnetic iron, the obverse consisting of a circular laurel leaf wreath, overlaid by a silvered zink alloy applique consisting of a central monogram of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, topped by a royal crown, and above a plaque bearing a number of 25, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, with a barrel hinge
